Have you made up your mind to design dresses for your bridesmaids? Then be very careful with the details. There are certain details that you need to look into, such as the fabric, color, hemline, neckline, and of course, the fittings. All these five criteria are essential, but if we have to pick one that is most important, then it has to be the ‘fittings’. If you have five bridesmaids, then you cannot merely buy dresses that have the same bust and waist size, isn’t it? And this is quite normal! You cannot expect all your bridesmaids to have the same body shape. First, take the body measurements of your bridesmaids, and then only go to a designer to talk about designing bridesmaid dresses.
Choose bridesmaid dresses according to body shapes:
Choosing bridesmaid dresses according to their body shape is difficult, but not impossible. Here are few things that you might like to follow, in order to make your bridesmaids look like princesses.
• Are they having “Pears shaped” bodies?: If you find that most of our bridesmaids have pears shaped bodies, then go for long dresses that gradually flare out in an ‘A’ formation from the waistline to the floor. This will basically conceal the heavy bottom portion and would highlight the narrowness of the midsection. Go for sturdier fabrics such as satin and taffeta since they won’t cling to the body. And in case of the neckline, choose spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline that will focus more on the slender upper body.
• For hourglass shaped body: If all your bridesmaids have an hourglass-like body (or almost like it) then you can ask your designer to design lovely body hugging dresses that would flaunt their curves really well. You can pick any type of fabric and choose any kind of neckline, as all will suit them.
• If they have “apple-shaped” bodies: If anyone bridesmaid has an apple-shaped body, then you have to be very careful while choosing bridesmaid dresses. You can do two things; either make a separate dress for that particular lady or make smart dresses that would suit every bridesmaid including the one having apple-shaped body. In case of apple-shaped body, make sure you ask your designer to make a dress that cinches in at the smallest point on the waistline, and then flares out in ‘A’ shape. Opt for a bodice that has a lot of texture such as lace detailing. This will camouflage and fit snugly, and creating a corset-like effect. The best neckline for this type of body shape is a deep V neckline.
• Are all your bridesmaids skinny? If your bridesmaids are skinny, then ask your designer to design dresses that will create artificial curves. Ask him/her to design dresses that look like ball gowns that cinches at the waistline, and descends into a beautiful, flowing floor-length skirt. Ball gown type of dresses will capitalize your bridesmaids’ slenderness, and camouflage the lack of hips.
